I'm beginning to think that the answer is no, YouTube does not support 5.1. Is that right? I've been going through a bunch of troubleshooting between my Yamaha RX-A1010, LG 55EF9500 OLED and audio formats. I've reached a point where I think the ultimate break point is Youtube. I can get 5.1 to work with DirecTV, BRD, Amazon app from the TV.

I've also tried 2 other sources my Macbook hooked up to the TV, ARC audio back to the receiver. And Apple TV (older version.3 years old?). I cannot get 5.1 with either of those. BUT, of note is that I can't get 5.1 with ANY content from the Apple TV.

This is hooked up directly to the AVR via HDMI. This last part gives me pause for thought because I fully expected the Apple TV to work through at least one of the apps. Trailers, etc. It only gives me 2.1 I'm going crazy here.no idea what to think especially with the Apple TV wrinkle. Right, there is no true 5.1 from YouTube. Apple TV 3 was always pretty solid for surround support (passthrough), so I'd check into swapping the cable and maybe trying a different HDMI port.

I wrote up a blog post/walk-through on setting up Apple TV for surround a while back. Sounds like you've covered everything, but just in case: Thank you Jeff. I will take a deeper look at your article. On a quick scan I noticed mention of a test app. I will get that as well. On another note, I just went over to the Monoprice store and got some basic redmere cables to replace the older basic ones I'm using now. I had one cheap audio quest cable and immediatelynoticed a difference in picture quality.

YouTube still only does 2.1. Seems to be a limitation. The other apps seem to be working as they should. I'm satisfied with the results and can accept the limitations.

As a side note, the surround sound test app referenced in Jeff's article worked really good. I'd highly recommend for anyone needing to test things.
